Tree pruning

Tree pruning can be beneficial for tree health or safety reasons, i.e. managing pests and diseases or structural and mechanical faults. It is most often used for aesthetic reasons, to control the shape, size and structure of the tree. It can also be used to maximise flower or fruit production, promote healthy growth and improve timber form and quality. The appropriate season should be considered when pruning, especially on stressed trees.

Specialist pruning services:

  • Crown thinning selectively removing branches, to allow light or air through the tree whilst maintaining a natural form.

  • Crown reduction / reshaping is not suitable with all species but can be carried out to control the overall size and spread of the tree.

  • Crown lifting by removing lower branches, increases light and feeling of space beneath the tree and may also be a legal requirement to clear paths, roads, signs and lights.

  • Dead wood, both in the tree and on the ground, is important for wildlife, so it is only recommended to remove it if it poses a risk to people or property.

  • Formative pruning should be carried out on young trees once established to encourage desired form and structure.

Tree removal

There are occasions when the removal of a tree is necessary; if it is dying from pests, diseases or environmental changes and is a risk to people, if it is causing structural damage to property or if it has grown too big and is unsuitable for the space.

Every situation is different - a tree can be straight felled or sectionally dismantled using specialist climbing and rigging techniques. I highly recommend planting a replacement when removing a tree and can offer advice on suitable species.

Hedge care

Hedges play a vital roll through-out the countryside and cities by providing boundaries, shelter and structure, as well as benefits for the environment such as habitat for wildlife and offsetting carbon.

Traditional hedge laying is the best way to manage countryside hedges ecologically. Laying a hedge rather than cutting the top will give a thicker hedge and a better barrier for stock and wind proofing, whilst providing better habitat for small mammals and birds and producing more flowers and fruit. For more information on the benefits of hedge laying visit National Hedge Laying Society.

Planting

Planting is one of the best things we can do for the planet and ecosystem, especially now with the loss of our Ash trees. I aim to plant more trees than I cut down. Ideally replacement trees will be planted on the same site, but otherwise in my own woodland or another site. I have planted thousands of trees so far.

Conservation areas, TPo's and Nesting season

Trees situated in conservation areas or covered by a tree preservation order ("TPO") are subject to planning permission. Other limitations to work are nesting birds or bats. Before tree work is carried out it is necessary to check for wildlife and if the trees are in a conservation area or protected by TPOs. I can carry out these checks and apply for the work to be undertaken, and advise on appropriate seasons for minimum disturbance to wildlife.
